After we pass under the spooky bridge and come back out into the fading light we look far ahead and see a person coming down the trail walking his dog. What a beautiful night to walk your pet with the smells and sights along the canal being spectacular. Ahead on the trail we see what looks like a wooden flat bridge with a handrail on the right. As we draw closer we see it IS a bridge that has a big dropoff to the right going down 40-50 feet or more in a waterfall to a creek. Its a Water Gateway or Spillway the state of NY can use to drain off excess water on the canal. They have giant valves on the left with rusty giant gears to adjust the flow. (photos later). The creek to the right is dozens of feet below the level of the Erie Canal.
