We have walked together in Brockport and just crossed the Main Street Liftbridge over the Erie Canal.  There is another way to cross, but it is much rarer as it is available only when the liftbridge is in the raised or up position to let the boats go under.  This is the stairway up each side of the liftbridge designed for pedestrians to cross the bridge when it is up and to let the liftbridge operator get to the tower controls.  There is a little gate and bell at the top that activate when the bridge raises.  I love how they still use a mechanical bell instead of some electronic buzzer.
