While driving through Northern California last summer we visited several Redwood National Forrests and Muir Woods. I have never seen such large and majestic tree. When driving on the small and curving roafs, we were passed by logging trucks one after another. Each truck was loaded to the top with Redwood trees. How could this be? Surely it is not legal to cut these trees down. Above are photos of a vast lumberyard that was exclusively full of stacked Redwoods as you can see. They appear to be telephone poles, but are much larger and all are Redwoods.
I went into several big chain lumber stores there and found this:
As you can see, there were many products available out of Redwood including boards, lattice and fence posts. When I discussed it with a specialty wood salesman apparently they are not cutting the old growth Redwoods but the newly planted fast growing plantations or forests. The new wood is very young and has wide weak growth rings compared to the old growth Redwoods that have narrow rings thousands of years old. I would like to see where they grow and harvest these young trees and hope it keeps them away from the old majestic ones…
