After coming out of the gnarly Strangler Fig tree, I walked about 50 feet down the beach trail at Emmerson Point Park in Palmetto, Florida and came across this little guy. He was just coming out of the dark undercover and crossing a downed tree onto the sugar white and soft sand. He was about 4 feet long, very healthy and was the first snake I have even seen at Emmerson Point after 50 years of going there.

I was thrilled to see him, but glad he was not in the Strangler Figure tree.

This is not a garter snake, but a ratsnake (Pantherophis)

Thanks Fons Sleijpen. I thought it was rather large for a garter snake. I have only seen red rat snakes and the occasional coral snake around.
