When you walk inside Thomas Jefferson’s house, Poplar Forest, in Forest Virginia, you find the inside fairly bare of woodwork because of a fire from one of the chimneys in the central room. Most of the woodwork and doors were handmade by a Mr. John Hemmings an enslaved man that was now head carpenter. He had traveled over from Monticello to help with the woodwork and general construction of Poplar Forest. These walnut doors were left over and made by him. Many were reproduced in the exact style to replace many that were burned. John Hemmings (or Hemings) worked with the Irish carpenter, James Dinsmore, for years before he became head carpenter. After he was freed, he stayed on at Monticello for all his years and hand made Jefferson’s Coffin.

Architecture, Canon, Canon 5D Mark III, Cathedral, Church, Door, Hinge, Ironwork, Pennsylvania, Perspective, photo, photography, Pittsburgh
I was photographing a beautiful cathedral on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. The huge wooden doors were painted red and had amazing amounts of ironwork on the hinges. Here I took a photo with a super wide angle lens (17-40 mm L) and of course it distorted the doors a little. Next to this image I “corrected” the distortion and straightened up the vertical lines. To me it appears unnatural and I prefer the tilted one. Any opinions on which is better?
Photographs separated for you: (Click on small image to see it larger and check out the ironwork hinges!)
Closeup of the door itself:
I tried every door at the cathedral as I wanted to get inside to take photos and all doors were tightly locked. I will have to go back in the future to see what the inside is like.

Walking around campus at SUNY (State University of NY) in Geneseo on a crisp Fall day, I was enjoying all the new architecture I had not seen before. Here are a few of the doorways there where the warmth of wood of the doors invites you in the cold stone and brick building.

This photo was taken at the Main Street Liftbridge and I liked the colors of the lifesaving ring verses the old wooden door. These are some of the colors of the State of New York and they paint thing quite frequently and keep them up well. The door goes to the lower floor of the Liftbridge tower.

Here we are at the Grace Carpenter Hudson Museum in Ukiah, California in the stifling but dry heat of Northern California. It was a nice 104 degrees out and I looked forward to visiting The Sun House, but as soon as we went in I realized it of course had no air conditioning as it was from 1919 or so. It was still cool with breezes and ventilation. This was the entrance to The Sun House with its trellis overhead and to the left a real Totem Pole. The door is bright finished like the sun and draws your eye in with its warmth. The surrounding wood is all old growth Redwood which is very dark in color and rot resistant. Closeup of The Sun House door, notice the logo over the door and the push button light switches. The hardware was amazing too:

It appears the only entrance to the Bok Tower in Lake Wales, Florida is this beautiful brass door. Its polished to a bright golden shine. It has the creation of the world carved onto it in detail. It leads into the first level of the tower the “sanctuary room”.
Here is the tower base and arched door reflected in the water:
Closeup of the door using a longer lens as they would not let you go near to that side. I would LOVE to enter in and go inside and explore around. And there is the intriguing red door and balcony on the next floor up, (more on that soon).
Swirly reflection of the door in the reflecting pond. I think there was a duck nearby causing the ripples:

Last view of the “Lighthouse”. This is actually the front door that was opened. I was fascinated by the old handmade door with its completely through mortise and tenons seen on the end. The ornate wooden door gave warmth and a welcome to all that stone used on the exterior.
